Afternoon folks,

I suspect that quite a few of you will already have heard the news, but inevitably some people won't have, so I thought I'd best post something just in case.

Rich Harding (Lead singer with Also Eden, and with Skyline Drifters, Misplaced Neighbourhood and other Fish/Marillion cover bands, not to mention a moderator and regular poster here) had a serious motorbike accident last night.

I haven't heard any specific details about the accident - all I have heard is that he is still in critical condition, has broken both legs & punctured a lung. He is currently in Abergavenny hospital but they plan to move him to a spinal unit in Cardiff when he is stable enough.

He has a gerat many friends here and elsewhere who I know will join me in wishing him all the very best for a speedy recovery, and wishing his partner Sarah strength and peace of mind as she waits for further news. I'm not the praying type, but I'm sure we'd all like to wish Rich all the very best for a speedy recovery. If positive vibes are enough to promote healing then I suspect he'll be fit for a marathon by the end of the summer...

Op face book van Sarah (zijn vriendin) staat de laatste stand van zaken hij is vanmiddag geopereerd en dat schijnt wel een behoorlijke heftige operatie te zijn
wat ik er van begreep erop of eronder (zet hem op Rich)

Zijn letsel is heftig.....ik heb veel motorongelukken gezien en op zich is het wel letsel wat veel voorkomt bij motorrijders. Wat het natuurlijk niet minder erg maakt, het is echt ernstig.

Grootste zorg zijn de inwendige bloedingen, en die zijn, bleek uit de operatie van gisteren, gestopt. En dat is heel goed nieuws. Sarah schreef dat ze met die operatie ook aan een been verder wilden, en dat dat wel weer een uur zou duren. Dat zou dus betkenen dat zijn lichaam dat wel aankan. Wat ook dus een positief bericht is.

Maar het is onzeker, en je weet te weinig om het goed in te schatten. De Lords houden alles voor zover dat kan in de gaten, en verder kunnen we niets dan ons blauw duimen.............. Vooralsnog zijn de gigs (in eerste instantie dus 4 september in Harderwijk) afgezegd.

Both lung drains have been removed, but he is still on the ventilator. Chest infection getting in the way of progress. Hoping for more progress today x

Not a good day. Rich has a secondary chest infection, so is having to
fight even harder. He needs all our love, support and positive thoughts
more than ever x

Die infectie was een complicatie waar ze waarschijnlijk niet op hadden gerekend. Hij is begreep ik zaterdag even bij kennis geweest, maar toen redde hij het nog niet.

Ze wilden vandeweek de narcose verminderen zodat hij wat bij kennis zou komen, maar of dat nog doorgaat, geen idee, want die 2e infectie kan dat hebben tegengehouden.

Updates On Rich
Update - 31st July

An update from Lucy - Rich's Sister

It is very hard to give you accurate predictions on Rich's future progress at this stage, but as some of you have asked for more details, I will try to give you a clearer picture of what he may be facing.

Once he can clear the chest infections, the next stage will be to assess his ability to breath on his own so that he can come off life support. This will entail the removal of the chest drain and the ventilator tubes. Timescale is unknown, but we hope this will happen over the next week, barring any further infection.

Once this happens, they will be able to reduce the sedation somewhat but, bearing in mind the extent of his injuries, he will still be laid flat out on his back and unable to move around, so he will still need a certain level of sedation and morphine to enable him to cope with the pain and discomfort.

This will mean that he will still be drowsy most of the time and not fully awake and lucid. However, we do hope that he will be able to communicate somewhat by then, as he should be able to speak once all the tubes are removed.

He also lost his spleen, so has much reduced ability to fight off any infection and will probably be on antibiotics for at least three years. We also are wary of the life-threatening aorta bleed that he suffered last week, but this appears to be stable and not causing any further problems.

As soon as he is stable, he will be moved by helicopter to another hospital (we hope this will be Frenchay in Bristol) so that he can have plastic surgery on his left leg (completely shattered shin with no skin left in one area) and also have his spinal fractures and neck assessed properly. They tell us that they 'think' his spinal cord has been unaffected and his neck is ok, but this is still an unknown at this stage.

He has the following bone fractures:

- left shoulder blade
- spine (5 places)
- ribs (at least 10, most are multiple fractures)
- hands (broken right thumb and other minor fractures in left hand)
- pelvis
- right leg (5 places)
- left leg (shattered)

Apart from the left leg, the prognosis is good for all the other fractures, but full healing will entail months of complete stability and bed rest in hospital. At least his arms are ok!!!

Again, it is hard to give accurate predictions, but at this stage the medical opinion is that he 'should' be able to walk again, but probably with some impairment of the left leg. It seems unlikely that he will be able to cope with landing a paraglider again though... he is obviously unaware of this yet.

We are hoping that the prolonged period on the ventilator and the damage to his lungs (both were punctured) will not affect his abilty to sing again, but we all just have to live in hope with that one.

So, in terms of people being able to visit him, this will probably have to wait until he is stable and settled in the next hospital and starting the next stage of his recovery. I know how many of you would love to see him, so we promise tol let you know as soon as this is possible.

Reading all that through is quite scary, but it is important that we all know the full extent of Rich's injuries so that we can fully appreciate how bloody hard he is going to have to fight to recover from this. It also reinforces how important all the love and support he's receiving from everyone is.

Please spare a thought for Rich whenever you can - he needs us all to help him get through this.

Beste allemaal,

goed nieuws deze keer, de infectie in zijn borst is bijna weg, hij is aan het bijkomen (wordt niet meer in slaap gehouden) en lijkt te begrijpen wat Sarah zegt. (communicatie met ogen knipperen). Als er geen rare dingen plaatsvinden als bloedingen gaat het vooral over mogelijke letsels in de nek en allerlei orthopedische zaken.

Een lange weg, maar eindelijk met een beetje meewind. fingers crossed!
